Vor rund 200 Jahren forderte der Dichter Novalis: "Die Welt muß romantisiert werden." Er meinte damit ein "Hinaufstimmen" kraft der eigenen Phantasie, um die Zumutungen seiner Gegenwart aushalten zu können. Die geistige Voraussetzung für das Entstehen der Romantik war das Unbehagen an der überlieferten Ordnung, die nicht im Stande war, den Auswirkungen der Französischen Revolution entgegenzutreten. Die Romantik lehnte die Wirklichkeit des ausgehenden 18. und beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts radikal ab. Sie sah die Gesellschaft geprägt von Gewinnstreben und vom bloßen Nützlichkeitsdenken des beginnenden industriellen Zeitalters. Den aufblühenden Naturwissenschaften warfen die Romantiker vor, sie würden alles mit dem Verstand erklären, alles auf seine Nützlichkeit, Verwertbarkeit untersuchen und keine Geheimnisse mehr lassen.

It was about 200 years ago that the poet Novalis claimed: "The world has to be romanticized". What he meant was a kind of "tuning up" by means of one's own fantasy in order to be able to bear the burden of one's own existence. The spiritual prerequisite for the birth of romanticism was uneasiness towards the traditional order and its inability to face the impacts of the French Revolution. Romanticism radically rejects the realism of the late 18th and early 19th centuries where society was regarded as being influenced by the mere profit-seeking and efficiency-oriented thinking of the nascent Industrial Age. The Romanticists blamed the burgeoning trend toward natural sciences on the contemporary propensity to explain everything rationally, examine things in terms of profitability and usability and thus leave nothing to the imagination. The Romanticists blamed this on the prospering natural sciences.
